Student Ministries

Student Ministries at Fairfax Community revolves around three main programs: worship, RUNWAY, and Small Groups.  Worship for Junior and Senior High students happens in the Hangar, our student center.  RUNWAY is our age appropriate outreach events here at church.  Small Groups for students meet weekly at various times and locations.

Sound Technician, Media Shout/Computer Operator, Light Board Operator

Students in today’s world have MTV, video games and plasma screens.  The stuff they watch is highly polished and produced.  We want all our technical efforts to be excellent and look and sound as good as the things our kids see outside the church in the media.

Who the position reports to
: Production Team Leader.
Time required: 2-3 hours per week.
Qualifications: Knowledge of sound mixing and band rehearsal are a big plus! Computer skills are also helpful.
Training: Training on sound mixing, computer set up and lights is available.
Benefits for the volunteer: We love our sound and computer techs, because their work behind the scenes, Allows the people up front to be heard and seen, without technical problems distracting students.  A lot of work goes into the program elements of our services.

Event Team Member

Many of our students first get connected to us and start a relationship with Jesus by coming to one of our events. So we want to have great outside events that are organized and of high quality.

Who the position reports to: Youth Pastors
Time required: Intense, but short - like a weekend away, several nights in a row, or a few hours for an event.
Qualifications:  Organizational skills are a must. You might drive a vehicle, set things up, or make things for a specific event.
Training:  Volunteers for this position are encouraged to come and be a helper at an event
to get a feel for how to organize and run an event.
Benefits for the volunteer: This is a great way to help out, without having to directly interact with students, or be called upon to make a speech, give a sermon, or play a game.

Small Group Leader

Our small group leaders interact with a group of students on a weekly basis encouraging them in their walk with Jesus. Small groups are the place where real life change takes place as we help students honor God with their lives.

Who the position reports to: Youth Pastors
Importance to the church: We have students from over 60 schools who attend services in the Hangar, getting them connected and thinking of each other as family is difficult.  Our small groups are the best place for that kind of community to happen.
Time required:  3.5 hours a week
Qualifications:  It’s a plus for leaders to have teaching and relationship skills. Leaders must pass a criminal background check.
Training:  We provide great training for our small groups leaders. We have an annual fall
retreat and monthly training tune-ups.
Benefits for the volunteer:  Small groups are where our students begin to own their faith. You will develop long lasting relationships with your students and have the potential to impact their lives forever.
Clearly explaining God’s word is not only a privilege, but also the duty of individuals God has given special gifts and talents to use.

Teacher

With separate student services, we have the opportunity to apply the Bible directly to the unique issues that kids are facing. Our teachers can go deep into youth related topics and help students see that God has a plan for their life.

Who the position reports to: Youth Pastors
Time required: On weeks that a teacher is assigned to teach at a service the time commitment can be anywhere from 10-20 hours, depending on individual prep time.
Qualifications:  Good communication skills, understanding of youth culture, ability to research, write, and breakdown scripture.
Training: Teaching ideas and guidance are available for every series we do.
Benefits for the volunteer:  There’s great satisfaction in grabbing a teenagers attention and
providing spiritual answers to life’s questions.   Every week our teachers have that opportunity.

RUNWAY Team Member

RUNWAY is our age appropriate outreach event that takes place periodically throughout the year. It’s theme driven, highly relational, and a safe place for kids to get connected to our church. Many kids start a long term relationship with us after first getting invited to RUNWAY.
